Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS), China Geological Survey – China

The Pearl River Delta (PRD) within the GBA is a globally significant urbanized estuary facing climate and anthropogenic pressures.Characterized by a multi-outlet, bay-filling structure, the region confronts complex challenges such as unstable sediment loads, water scarcity, erosion, salt intrusion, and subsidence.

This project utilizes integrated Earth observation, remote sensing, and field surveys to monitor mangrove, estuarine, and coastal ecosystems.

It analyzes hydro-geological processes, carbon sequestration, and human-natural drivers of degradation in PRD’s land–sea interaction zones. By synthesizing satellite, UAV, and in-situ data, GMGS and partners will establish multi-element indicators and scalable models for shoreline-ecosystem co-evolution. Integrated Shoreline–Ecosystem Co-Evolution Assessment Framework and science-informed strategies for spatial planning, climate adaptation, and sustainable resource management will promote knowledge sharing and partnerships development.
